Art Assignment

Introduction

Traditional Art is art made in history that was made using traditional methods. Traditional methods were often used by traditional artist using the limited technology they had at the time by utilizing classical techniques in drawing, painting, and sculpting. Traditionally art is not necessarily paintings, traditional art can also be artwork such as sculptures and architecture. An example of a traditional artist is Vincent Van Gogh. Vincent Van Gogh was born in 1853 and painted from when he was 27 until he died at the age from 37. Unfortunately it wasn't until 1901 (after he died) that his paintings and him started to become popular, he became one of the most famous artist of all time and Vincent Van Gogh still is to this day.

Digital art is art made using modern art software. Digital art is made digitally using a computer with software like photoshop or other methods. Digital art is not just still images, digital art is anything produced or made on digital media, such as animations, photographs, illustrations, videos, digital paintings. Digital art is used in animation, games, visual effects and even stuff like clothes as well as more. Digital art a modern form of art unlike traditional art but traditional art styles could be used within digital art.

Vincent Van Gogh (Traditional Artist)

Vincent Van Gogh was born in 1853 and lived until 1890 and started painting when he was 27, this was just 10 years before his death in 1890. Van Gogh would use oil paints to creating his paintings and would also use a certain technique. Van Gogh's paintings are unique because of his painting style. Van Gogh would use a technique call impasto to create his paintings. Impasto is a technique used in painting, where paint is laid on an area of the surface thickly, usually thick enough that the brush strokes are clearly visible. This is evident in paintings such as the series of sun flowers that Van Gogh created with this technique. Vincent Van Gogh also used some other techniques in creating his art. Such as in his self portraits where he used the Neo Impressionist style, with short, rough brushstrokes as well as some longer, softer brush strokes. The Neo Impressionist art style is the use of mixing bright colours to try to add more luminosity to colours and the art as a whole.

Before Vincent Van Gogh began as an artist Vincent Van Gogh tried a series of jobs that all ultimately did not work out. Van Gogh began his first job at the age of 16, his uncle got him a job as a trainee with an art dealership in The Hague. He went on to do stints in the firm’s London and Paris offices before he was fired in 1876. He also tried other jobs such as a teacher and working in a store then when non of these jobs worked out Vincent Van Gogh began to paint when his attempt to become a preacher didn't work out, Vincent Van Gogh would sketch local miners and peasants while living in Belgium. In 1880 he decided to completely focus on painting and became an artist. This was his last career and it ended up making him one of the most famous artist in the world but it was not until after he died that him and his art became internationally famous.

How Traditional art could be integrated into digital art

Vincent Van Gogh's traditional style could be digitalized using modern digital art software such as photoshop. This could be done by using traditional styled brushes in photoshop to create digital art using traditional art styles. From this traditional art could then be integrated into animation, games or VFX.

Traditional art could be recreated using digital art software like photoshop. You could replicate traditional art in photoshop by mimicking the brush style as well as copying the colours and texture of the paint.

How digitalizing traditional art could be useful

Digital art is very common today and is used for a lot of things, such as games, movies, animation, visual effects and much more. This means if traditional art was integrated into digital art it could be implemented into everything that digital art can be, So this means that traditional art could be used in games, animation, visual effects and more. This would be useful because it will give things like games and animation a wider variety of art styles.

Vincent Van Gogh - The Starry Night

'The Starry Night' is a very famous piece of artwork created by Vincent Van Gogh in the year 1889. This is another piece of artwork that he painted using the impasto technique, this is evident because you can clearly see the brush strokes going across the canvas. This was made by using multiple layers of paint on an oil canvas and using a lot of spiral shapes to create the sky and stars. Vincent Van Gogh is said to be the pioneer of the impasto technique as this technique was not commonly used before Vincent Van Gogh art became popular. This is why the impasto technique is usually associated with the work of Vincent Van Gogh. This technique could be replicated in photoshop by using a thick brush and copying the spiral shapes of the sky and stars, next you would then add multiple thin layers of paint and use a thick brush that replicates the texture.

'The Starry Night' could be replicated digitally using digital art software such as photoshop, however it would not be the same as the original piece from 1889 as well as being lower quality. This is because you would not be able to see all of the detail in comparison to the artwork being hand painted with a brush and would not be the same as seeing it in person. This means that you could recreate traditional artwork digitally however, this does not necessarily mean that the digital artwork will be an improvement on traditional art.

Vincent Van Gogh - Sunflowers

'Sunflowers' is a series of traditional art paintings painted by Vincent Van Gogh. These paintings were all painted using Vincent Van Gogh's famous impasto technique where he would use a thick layer of paint and use a thick brush so that the brush marks were clearly visible in the painting. The reason why Vincent Van Gogh painted so many sunflowers is because together the paintings were to form a triptych. The two Sunflowers were the 'yellow panels' that would intensify the colours of the portrait. Vincent Van Gogh thought that the triptych as a whole symbolized gratitude.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are some benefits of integrating traditional art into digital art. Such as it is quick and easy. Also digital art can not be damaged or ruined. As well as being quick, using digital software is also cheap compared to using traditional methods. Integrating traditional art into digital art could also be useful because this will mean that traditional art, such as Vincent Van Gogh's 'The Starry Night' for example, could be used in games, animation, visual effects and more. Doing this would be useful because it will give games and animation a wider variety of art styles.

However, there are also cost of integrating traditional art into digital art. This is because it would not be the same as the original artwork due to it not being able to see the exact details as well as loosing the value of traditional artwork. This is because traditional art is hand painted, using a brush. This allows for more detail and makes it noticeable that it is hand painted. For example if Vincent Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers' paintings were digitalized they would not be the same as the original traditional paintings due to the lack of detail and because of this the digitalized painting would not look as good as the traditional. Also lots of traditional art styles would not fit in modern games and animation and would not look right.

Overall I think that even though integrating traditional art would not look as good or as detailed as traditional art and some styles of traditional art would look bad or out of place in modern games, animation and visual effects, I think it would be good digitalized in some aspects. The reason that I think this is because if traditional art was to be digitalized it could be used in things such as games, animation and visual effects as digital art. This would be useful for games, animation and visual effects as well as objects like clothes can be designed with digital art. because they would have a wider rage of digital art to work with which would be very useful for digital art.
